Planning estimate, October 2026: monthly living costs for a furnished studio/one-bedroom stay of 1–3 months, including utilities, groceries, some dining and local transport. Flights, travel insurance, visa fees, paid medical care, deposits and major excursions are extra. Actual prices and availability vary.

Winter living: Hoi An

Hoi An offers lantern-lit streets, cafés, markets, distinctive food and a slower routine. Town, countryside and beach bases create different winters, and arrival month matters as much as enthusiasm.

The Snowmad scorecard

These are editorial assessments for Canadians considering several weeks or months abroad. Each category is worth ten points. The scores are conversation starters, not guarantees or a claim that we have personally lived in every destination.

Winter weather: 6/10

Early winter can be cloudy, wet and cooler, with storm and flooding considerations. February and March generally provide a stronger weather proposition than December and January.

Long-stay accommodation: 8/10

Furnished rentals support a longer stay, but choose between town, countryside and beach deliberately. Check flood exposure, ventilation, kitchen, mattress, laundry and extra charges.

Cost of living: 9/10

Local food and carefully chosen accommodation offer strong value potential. Imported comforts, Western restaurants and resort living can change the budget.

Getting there: 5/10

Da Nang is the usual airport gateway, followed by a road transfer. Connections and the distance from Canada make a long stay easier to justify than frequent trips home.

Entry and length of stay: 8/10

Check Vietnam’s current visa requirements and approved validity against the exact dates of your stay. A multiple-entry permission does not restart its expiry clock after a side trip.

Healthcare access: 6/10

Nearby Da Nang offers more extensive private hospital options. Confirm relevant treatment, medication and evacuation arrangements rather than assuming every specialist is nearby.

Safety and stability: 7/10

Protect phones and bags, use reputable transport and account for unfamiliar traffic. Flooding and seasonal storms also belong in the rental decision.

Daily life without a car: 8/10

Walking, cycling and taxis can support everyday life from the right base. Uneven surfaces, wet weather and the distance between town and beach affect convenience.

Lifestyle and experience: 10/10

Historic surroundings, food, markets, tailoring and nearby countryside give a long stay variety. Gordo’s bánh mì research proposal currently reads “another one, please.”

Canadian Snowmad fit: 8/10

Culturally curious travellers can find strong value and a satisfying slower routine. The fit is weaker for guaranteed early-winter beach weather, easy trips home or complex healthcare close at hand.
